A month later – and still no cure
January 14, 2008 by Jamaal
Many of you have surely been wondering where I’ve been. Well, at the start of the Summer holidays I made myself a “Holiday To Do List†– an extensive list of tasks I wanted to complete over the holiday period. Some of them included work tasks, and others were personal. This list is actually still stuck up in my office. But I did not manage to complete one single task.
It’s been a very tough time for myself and my family because I’ve been very ill. It started at the very outset of the holidays – I was having severe headaches and when I saw a doctor he said that it was probably eye strain. This made sense to me because over the past few months I’ve been reading for hours on end. I then made an appointment to have my eyes tested, and I was told that I do in fact need reading glasses. A few days later though I started getting high fevers. Up until today the fevers don’t want to go away. After seeing several doctors privately and at hospital, and after several blood and other tests, no one can pinpoint what the problem is. Physically I’m healthy, but the fevers are still persisting.
I’m at work today for the first time, and when I left home I was quite fine, but as soon as I got to the office my temperature shot up again.
If any of you can offer any advice I would really appreciate it. For a month now I’ve been struggling with this and no one seems to have an answer.
May the year ahead be a good one for us all.

Jamaal, I don’t know what to say, but I am wondering if this is not perhaps infectious. A friend of mine displayed the same symptoms, and became extremely ill — so ill that he was almost passing out some of the time. The doctor treated him for a viral infection like flu, but it didn’t help with the headaches. We eventually wondered if the headaches weren’t perhaps a separate thing (from low blood sugar), because they returned later (after the fever) — but were aparently cured by a good plate of food!
Of course tick bite fever (which is extremely serious and a life-threatening illness) also displays some of the same symptoms, including the fever and headaches. I had it a few years ago and ended up in hospital, lost 7 kg in a short time and was unable to work properly for quite a long time because I couldn’t concentrate or multi-task. Not all doctors diagnose it properly, but those who have lived in rural areas know the symptoms well. (You would also have a sore bump somewhere and spots on your body.) Subsequently several people I know told me that they had relatives who died of tick-bite fever.
Hi Tania
I’m feeling much better now, thanks your comment and concern. It’s good to be back and I hope to stay healthy for a looooong time! :)
