Facebook Spam

August 12, 2008 by Jamaal

This afternoon I did an awesome video and photo shoot with Rafiq Phillips and Charl Norman. I interviewed them at the new Blueworld offices at 210 On Long (I wrote about Blueworld here), and the objective was to cover their new project called SEOblog.co.za. I’ll be putting up photos in a few hours, and video in a few days – check back here for updates. That’s not the subject of this post though. When I left the shoot, on my way home I logged into Twitter on my mobile – as I always do. I sent a tweet, and logged into Facebook – as I always do. Then I saw a very shocking wall post – it read:

“have you heard about some blog that was about you? its really bad ;( i think you and everyone should read it http://cudearewuzy.blogspot.com” (actually, the URL is not very accurate, because I deleted the wall post without doing a screen grab of it, but it was close to “cudearewuzy.blogspot.com”!)

This looked very strange, but I went to the link, and of course, it took me to an error page. The wall post “supposedly” came from one of my Facebook Friends, Naasir Bakhsh, and when I went to his profile, I saw that that this spam attack was doing the same to some of Naasir’s other friends as well.

A few days ago Ramon Thomas had a Facebook status message saying something about a “Facebook worm” – and I’ve been getting MSN spam also from 2 of my contacts in that program.

What’s happening? Has spam grown up now? I hate to see spam move into our social networking websites and IM programs. What is your take on this? Where will this lead to?

    As salamu ‘alaykum Sidi,

    I got the same wall post from Naasir. Firefox 3 had a BIG warning about the link. It’s a dangerous world out there and these CNN Alerts are no joke. A friend of mine had his laptop shut down after clicking on the links in that email.

    Hey Jamaal that Facebook worms is the real deal. I’ve posted the link to my blog post when you click on my name. Right now its only a medium risk but you can expect higher risk to come with increased use of Ajax and Javascript.

    @Mikael – Wa’Alaykum Salaam Sidi, yes its not joke, I hate this sort of “disturbance” to platforms we get used to – It must be a real strange human being who would create a virus that does so much harm!

    @iMuslim – Been a Mac user for a few months so don’t worry :)

    @Shaik – I hope you’re not still on Windows bro! lol

    @Ramon – I agree Ramon, it’ll get worse – but what can we do about it? Who/how do you contact Facebook?
